En tiempo de COVID-19, año 2020, ni siquiera
imaginamos lo que se nos venía. En las ciudades, es cierto que con menos autos
circulando, se sanearía la atmósfera, mientras que el silencio nocturno, nos
permitiría escuchar sonidos inexplicables cercanos a nuestros hogares. Con el
confinamiento de las personas, la vida silvestre, relajada, sale a explorar
patios, avenidas y ciudades. Toda actividad
fue cancelada o pospuesta, entonces no tenemos manera de saber lo que realmente
está ocurriendo con la vida silvestre en el campo, pero me lo podría imaginar.
En las áreas boscosas, en las tierras bajas de Darién, imagino a los jóvenes de
águila harpía y águila crestada, que nacieron a finales del 2018, volando de
rama en rama, practicando la cacería y convirtiéndose en audaces águilas
juveniles. Los que nacieron en noviembre o diciembre, 2019, para esta fecha, ya
deben ser ágiles volantones.
In times of
COVID-19, the year 2020, we did not even imagine what was coming. In the
cities, with fewer cars driving, the atmosphere would be cleaned up, while the
silence at night would allow us to hear unexplainable sounds near our homes.
With the confinement of people, animals come out to explore yards, avenues, and
cities. All activity was canceled or
postponed, so we have no way of knowing what is happening to the countryside's
wildlife, but I could imagine it. In the woodland areas in Darien's lowlands, I
guess the young harpy eagle and crested eagle, which were born in late 2018,
flying from branch to branch, practicing hunting and becoming bold young
eagles. Those born in November or December 2019, by this date, should already
be agile fliers.
En el gran humedal de la Laguna de Matusagaratí, que
espero no hayan quemado, como ocurre en cada verano, imagino a las aves,
preparando sus nidos entre el pajonal, entre los arbustos o en los árboles
adyacentes a los ríos Tuira y Balsas. Especies como el donacobio, el cual es
originario de Suramérica y avistada sólo al este de Panamá en manglares y
vegetación densa a lo largo de grandes ríos. El Humedal Laguna de Matusagaratí
es un área protegida y sus herbazales inundables son un ecosistema único en
Panamá, y aún extenso, que alberga interesantes especies de aves, y por eso,
hay que cuidarlo.
The
significant wetland of Matusagaratí, which I hope has not been burned, as it
always happens every summer, I imagine the birds are preparing their nests
among the grass, among the bushes, or in the trees near the rivers Tuira and
Balsas. Species like the Donacobio, which is native of South America and only
seen at the east of Panama in mangroves and dense vegetation along large
rivers. The Laguna de Matusagaratí Wetland is a protected area. Its floodable
grasslands are a unique ecosystem in Panama and a vast home to exciting bird
species; therefore, we must take care of it.
