Características:

·        Rara, solitaria y cautelosa

·        Se le ubica en áreas de humedales y en riachuelos en áreas boscosas, por lo que es indicador de áreas en buen estado de conservación

·        Su pico es fuerte, delgado y la punta asemeja a un puñal. Captura peces pequeños, ranas y lagartijas

·        Es una garza de hermoso plumaje entre gris y castaño, mostrando unas plumas plateadas en el área del cuello

Characteristics:

- Rare, solitary and cautious.

- It is found in wetland areas and in streams in wooded areas, so it is an indicator of areas in good conservation status.

- Its bill is strong, thin and the tip resembles a dagger. It catches small fish, frogs and lizards.

- It is a heron with beautiful plumage between gray and brown, showing silver feathers in the neck area.

• Especialidad del Darién. 

• Especie inconfundible, encontrado en hábitats pantanosos de tierras bajas desde el extremo este de Panamá hasta el norte de Argentina  

• Sus marcas características es su dorso color marrón oscuro, siendo más negro en la cabeza, las partes inferiores son de color crema-amarillento, y llama la atención el iris color amarillo, un parche blanco en las alas y puntas blancas grandes en la cola. 

• Se alimenta principalmente de invertebrados que captura en la superficie de las hojas de pastos, o de insectos que captura al vuelo. 

• Puede andar en parejas o grupos familiares 

 • Unmistakable species, found in lowland swamp habitats from the eastern tip of Panama to northern Argentina

• Its distinctive features are its dark brown upperparts (blacker on the head), beige underparts, penetrating yellow eyes, a white patch on the wings, and large white tips on the tail.

• It feeds mainly on invertebrates that it captures on the surface of the leaves of grass or insects that it catches on the fly.

 EXPERIENCIA EN LA GIRA AL HUMEDAL DE MATUSAGARATÍ 

Experience in the Matusagaratí Wetland Tour

En esta publicación del blog Conociendo al Humedal de Matusagaratí, les contaré mi experiencia durante la gira realizada en el mes de octubre con el resto de mis compañeros, los Jóvenes por Matusagaratí.

 El bus del Centro Regional Universitario de Darién, me recogió en la parada de Sansoncito, aun no salía el sol. No era un día común y corriente, estaba emocionado por visitar el Humedal y observar las distintas especies de plantas y animales, que ya conocía, pero en fotos que nos mostraban los facilitadores que nos apoyan en nuestro proyecto de servicio social. En el Super Centro El Yavizano nos aguardaban las piraguas para iniciar el recorrido hacia el Humedal. Por el distanciamiento social, nos separamos en dos grupos, y seguimos todas las medidas de bioseguridad. Nuestro recorrido inicio en el río Chucunaque hasta que observamos el río Tuira. Esta confluencia en sencillamente un lugar especial, mientras conocía personalmente a especies como el cativo, el castaño darienita, el gavilán de ciénaga, la garza cocoi, entre otras.

Mientras seguía deslumbrado por las plantas y las aves, llegamos en donde reposaba un barco hundido. Cuenta la leyenda que se trataba del barco Leydi Calipso, que en los años 50 viajaba desde la ciudad de Panamá hacia Yaviza, con mercancía, y en uno de los viajes sufrió un percance y se hundió. Seguimos navegando y nos adentramos en el estero Aligandí, y por suerte, la marea nos dejó tocar tierra firme y allí conocí los herbazales inundables (tifa), la negra jorra, los gigantes árboles de alcornoques, entre otros más. Finalmente, termino esta publicación diciendo que esta experiencia fue inolvidable, pues ahora entiendo la importancia del Humedal de Matusagaratí, no solo para la provincia de Darién, sino para el país, ya que el sitio alberga ecosistemas únicos (como el herbazal inundable), especies de plantas y animales (que son especialidades), además de su influencia en el clima, por tales razones, vale la pena conservarlo.

For this field trip, the Darien Regional Center bus picked us up at the bus stop of Sansoncito. It was an ordinary day. I was excited to visit the Wetland and observe the different species of plants and animals that live there; since I had heard about other conferences in our social work project. We arrived early at the Yavizano supercenter, where the canoes were waiting for us to start the observation tour, take photos and get to know the Wetland. We went up in separate groups to the canoes, always keeping our distance and following all the biosecurity measures recommended by the health authorities due to the situation we live in worldwide. We started our journey through the majestic waters of the Chucunaque River. Then we reached the Tuira River's estuary, where you can observe the union of both rivers beautifully. We continued sailing on the Tuira River to watch some birds and plant species, which I can mention; Los Cativos and some bird species.  After a long journey along the Tuira River, we observed a boat's ruins, which legend has it was a boat called the Calypso Legend that traveled from Panama City to Yaviza. On one of those trips, it suffered a mishap and sank in the Tuira River. We took pictures and recorded a video about this legend. After visualizing these ruins and taking some photos, we continued our journey until we reached and climbed up one of the Esteros until we reached the land that forms part of the Matusagaratí Wetland. We landed and found species of flooded grasses such as the Negra Jorra, species of Cork Trees, and some other species of trees that are very striking and give greenness to the rivers and estuaries' banks. I finish this publication with a brief text that I will begin by saying that my experience in this tour has been of great help to my knowledge of plants and animals' different species.   To know how vital is The Matusagaratí Wetland for Darien and the country in general since many species of animals and plants can only be known and observed in this place, that is why the population needs to maintain and conserve it in good condition.

Threats criteria:

National importance: Critically Endangered (CR) species according to MI AMBIENTE (2016), this being the highest category of conservation at the national level.

International Importance: CITES II species according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which is an international agreement between governments.

 

Características:

· Rapaz diurna frecuente en el hábitat apropiado, tales como: áreas de aguas tranquilas o de corrientes lentas que incluyen manglares, lagunas, pantanos, bosques fluviales, estanques y campos inundados.

·         Es una especie indicadora del buen estado de conservación de los humedales.

·         Se alimenta de peces, ranas, pequeñas aves, mamíferos e insectos.

Characteristics:

Frequent diurnal raptor in suitable habitat such as: areas of still or slow-flowing water including mangroves, lagoons, marshes, riverine forests, ponds, and flooded fields.

 It is an indicator species for the good conservation status of wetlands.

It feeds on fish, frogs, small birds, mammals and insects.

En tiempo de COVID-19, año 2020, ni siquiera imaginamos lo que se nos venía. En las ciudades, es cierto que con menos autos circulando, se sanearía la atmósfera, mientras que el silencio nocturno, nos permitiría escuchar sonidos inexplicables cercanos a nuestros hogares. Con el confinamiento de las personas, la vida silvestre, relajada, sale a explorar patios, avenidas y ciudades.  Toda actividad fue cancelada o pospuesta, entonces no tenemos manera de saber lo que realmente está ocurriendo con la vida silvestre en el campo, pero me lo podría imaginar. En las áreas boscosas, en las tierras bajas de Darién, imagino a los jóvenes de águila harpía y águila crestada, que nacieron a finales del 2018, volando de rama en rama, practicando la cacería y convirtiéndose en audaces águilas juveniles. Los que nacieron en noviembre o diciembre, 2019, para esta fecha, ya deben ser ágiles volantones.

In times of COVID-19, the year 2020, we did not even imagine what was coming. In the cities, with fewer cars driving, the atmosphere would be cleaned up, while the silence at night would allow us to hear unexplainable sounds near our homes. With the confinement of people, animals come out to explore yards, avenues, and cities.  All activity was canceled or postponed, so we have no way of knowing what is happening to the countryside's wildlife, but I could imagine it. In the woodland areas in Darien's lowlands, I guess the young harpy eagle and crested eagle, which were born in late 2018, flying from branch to branch, practicing hunting and becoming bold young eagles. Those born in November or December 2019, by this date, should already be agile fliers.

En el gran humedal de la Laguna de Matusagaratí, que espero no hayan quemado, como ocurre en cada verano, imagino a las aves, preparando sus nidos entre el pajonal, entre los arbustos o en los árboles adyacentes a los ríos Tuira y Balsas. Especies como el donacobio, el cual es originario de Suramérica y avistada sólo al este de Panamá en manglares y vegetación densa a lo largo de grandes ríos. El Humedal Laguna de Matusagaratí es un área protegida y sus herbazales inundables son un ecosistema único en Panamá, y aún extenso, que alberga interesantes especies de aves, y por eso, hay que cuidarlo.

The significant wetland of Matusagaratí, which I hope has not been burned, as it always happens every summer, I imagine the birds are preparing their nests among the grass, among the bushes, or in the trees near the rivers Tuira and Balsas. Species like the Donacobio, which is native of South America and only seen at the east of Panama in mangroves and dense vegetation along large rivers. The Laguna de Matusagaratí Wetland is a protected area. Its floodable grasslands are a unique ecosystem in Panama and a vast home to exciting bird species; therefore, we must take care of it.

Manglares en el Humedal de Matusagaratí

En el Humedal de Matusagaratí, los manglares son  franjas ubicadas en los márgenes de los ríos Balsas y Tuira, cercanos a su desembocadura. Como sabemos, la particularidad de este ecosistema es la tolerancia a altas concentraciones de salinidad y a los suelos anegados temporalmente, cuando sube la marea.

In the Matusagaratí Wetland, the mangroves are strips located on the Balsas and Tuira rivers banks, near their estuary. As we know, this ecosystem's particularity is the tolerance to high concentrations of salinity and to temporarily flooded soils when the tide rises.

Esta vegetación puede alcanzar alturas de 25 metros o más, y dominan especies como el mangle caballero (Rhizophora racemosa) o el mangle salado (Avicennia bicolor). Menos frecuentes, se observan otras especies como el mangle rojo (Rhizophora mangle), el mangle negro (Avicennia germinans), el mangle piñuelo (Pelliciera rhizophorae) y el mangle blanco (Laguncularia racemosa).

This vegetation can reach 25-meter heights or more, inhabited by species such as Red Mangle (Rhizophora Racemosa) or Sal Mangrove (Avicennia Bicolor). Less observed species such as Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle), Black Mangrove (Avicennia germinans), Piñuelo Mangrove (Pelliciera Rhizophorae), and White Mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa).

Existen otras especies de plantas que se asocian a los manglares, como la negra jorra (Acrostichum aureum), el mangle botón (Conocarpus erectus), el mangle marica (Tabebuia palustris), entre otras. En las zonas de transición entre manglares y otros tipos de bosques, se encuentran los alcornocales, formados por mangle caballero y alcornoque (Mora oleifera) o por alcornoque y cativo (Prioria copaifera).

There are other species of plants associated with mangroves, such as the Negra Jorra (Acrostichum aureum), the button mangrove (Conocarpus erectus), and the Marica mangrove (Tabebuia palustris), among others. In the transitional areas between mangroves and other types of forests, there are the Cork-oak groves, formed by red mangrove and cork oak (Mora oleifera) or by Cork-oak and Cativo (Prioria copaifera).

Por tanto, hemos aprendido que la cobertura de manglar está conformada por diferentes especies de mangle, y hay zonas de transición formadas por mangle y otras especies, tan importantes como el alcornoque, el cual no ha sido estudiado como tal y en el Humedal se encuentra en extensos rodales, que ameritan más investigación.

Therefore, we have learned that the mangrove area is made up of different species of mangrove, and there are transitional zones formed by mangrove, and other species, as important  as the Cork-oak, which has not been studied as it is, and in the Wetland is found in extensive spot,  which deserve more research.
